The early pop culture of the 20s includes mass media, movies, and spectator sports which played important roles in peoples lives. People began having new heroes, like Babe Ruth, they started listening to the radio, something that is seen in most American homes, they started listening to jazz.
Radio
The radio was the most powerful communication medium to come out in the 1920s. People were incorporating the use of the radio into their every day lives. The radio helped the nation experience hearing news as it happened. It help the Americans' world open up, being able to hear the president talk or listening to the World Series live. Through live broadcasting of sports people started having a new idea of a hero, it would be hard for an American to not know who Babe Ruth is or Helen Wills and to see them as sport heroes. |
Pop Heroes
As mention above people started making heroes of athletes. The 1920s was considered the Golden Age of Sports. Many athletes started setting records, and the ones that started out as an underdog and then made their name in the sports industry gave people the ides that they can also make their lives better. Thus making them a heroic figure. |
